A recent insightful survey, conducted by Chemist+Druggist in partnership with Curaleaf Laboratories, has provided crucial understanding into the perceptions of medical cannabis among pharmacy professionals across the UK.
This collaborative research sheds light on their views regarding its role in patient care and identifies key challenges that need to be addressed to broaden access for eligible patients who could benefit.
The survey yielded several findings:
- Positive Attitudes Amidst Persistent Stigma: 61% of pharmacy professionals reported holding a positive view of medical cannabis. However, a substantial 64% still believe that stigma exists around its use. This stigma is largely attributed to its historical associations and a perceived lack of comprehensive education within the healthcare community.
- The Critical Need for Education: Despite a generally positive outlook, the survey revealed a significant gap in formal training. Only 6% of respondents indicated they had received formal education specifically on medical cannabis. This highlights a clear unmet need, especially considering that an overwhelming 92% expressed a keen interest in learning more about this evolving field. Enhanced education and professional development opportunities are evidently crucial for empowering pharmacy professionals.
- Community Pharmacies as Key to Access: A strong majority, 83% of pharmacy professionals, believe that community pharmacies should play a role in dispensing medical cannabis. This recognition underscores the potential of local pharmacies to provide a safe, regulated point of access for patients, coupled with valuable patient support and guidance.
We commend Curaleaf Laboratories for their commitment to illuminating these important perspectives.
This research underscores the vital need for continued education and open dialogue within the healthcare sector. By addressing knowledge gaps and fostering understanding, we can collectively work towards breaking down remaining barriers and ensuring that eligible patients have safer and more reliable access to prescribed cannabis.
