Curaleaf Clinic Campaign: Why Expanding NHS Access to Medical Cannabis Matters for Patients and the Economy

Curaleaf Clinic and Centre for Economics and Business Research (Cebr) recently published new research that finds widening access to medical cannabis in the UK could unlock £13.3 billion for the economy in the next decade and help thousands of patients suffering with chronic conditions return to work.

The impactful research has been highlighted by major UK news platforms such as The Sun, The Mirror and The Express.

With 40% of the UK population still unaware that medical cannabis is legally available, and 62% of people with long-term illness saying they’ve exhausted all traditional treatments, the time for change is now.

Key findings:

  • Around 2.8 million people in the UK are currently locked out of employment due to long-term illness.
  • 62% report they have exhausted all traditional treatment options.
  • Since 2018, private prescriptions have already contributed an estimated £283 million in Gross Value Added (GVA) to the UK economy by helping people return to work.
  • Wider NHS access could help add £13.3 billion to the economy over the next decade.

We hope for greater NHS access, with clear prescribing pathways and government-funded research. Ultimately, this gives patients more choice and, for some, the chance to rejoin the workforce.
